Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a consciousness and a practice for speaking and listening from the heart. Founded by Marshall Rosenberg, PhD as a way to empathically engage, mediate, teach and lead, NVC is an effective way to communicate and connect. The skills learned make a difference for people at home, at work, in challenging and in celebratory situations.

NVC provides a framework for understanding oneself, other people and organizations, to support human growth, development and change.

Brenda teaches NVC to private clients and their families,
to organizations, companies, universities, and at retreats.

People have used Brenda's NVC teaching to transform their personal lives, their work, their relationships and families, their life plan, their health and wellbeing, their organizations, their outlook on life and what is possible.

There are four main components of NVC, listed below.

Observations

The NVC practice of making observations is to distinguish opinions, evaluations, comparisons and judgements as different from observations. The purpose is to be clear and to help others hear what is being said, as intended.

Needs

The NVC practice of living with a needs awareness is to distinguish strategies from needs. When needs are honored and valued, strategies that meet needs are mutually recognized and understood.

Feelings

The NVC practice of speaking feelings is to distinguish thoughts from feelings. Feelings are discerned as the emotional energies arising naturally within a person. Empathy requires an awareness of and connection with feelings.

Requests

The NVC practice of making requests keeps communication in the present moment. With NVC, requests are distinguished from demands, and people are supported to respond freely and honestly.
